Introduction

Welcome to the (peri) menopause course. The menopause is the time in your life when your periods have stopped and the peri-menopause is the transition phase which can last months or years.

The menopause is a biological reality but the women going through it now are possibly the first generation to be able to talk about it openly. The chances are that your grandmother, and possibly even your mother, never spoke to you about it and so it is often hard to navigate without the map of older women to guide us.

Knowledge is power and so this course will give you information as well as reflection activities to help you chose how you want to approach this time in your life.

The typical age for women to experience the menopause is in their early fifties, but for some it starts much earlier. It can be brought on by having a hysterectomy, ovectomy or oestrogen supressing drugs used in cancer treatments. One way or another, anyone who has oestrogen in their body, will experience the menopause. Some of us will glide through it easily and for others symptoms can be difficult and sometimes debilitating. It is important to be aware of signs and symptoms to understand what is happening within us.
